i'm not totally sure. at our school we use both remo and evans. evans on snares. remo on basses and tenors. on tenors mainly cuz our teacher doesn't want to spend the money to replace all of the heads. and basses because that's what they came with and it says yamaha on them

Are the Evans MX heads made of kevlar and will they work on a low tension drum without popping?

to Snareline, yes they are made of kevlar and no the MX heads are high-tension heads so with a low-tension drum you will not get much of a sound from them. they more likely will just make a blank thud if that at full tension on the drum. you will break the lugs before the head would sound any good.

They get their materials from the same sources. So if you can find an assembly difference, use that to decide. If not, throw a dart, toss a coin, you get the idea.

Roy Burns told me that on the phone (when I was doing research for this awesome head comparison chart I made for this site). Even he admitted there are no inherent differences in the head materials, just the assembly. He IS Aquarian BTW.

We use Evans where I teach at SHHS. Although, we're about to switch to Remo BlackMax for the snares, everything else is staying Evans. I do like the sound of pinstripes on tenors, but they pull pretty easily and don't last very long.

In the Raven's drumline, we use Remo.

Personally, I think the Evans tune more easily, but tone wise they are fairly close.
